Alto Turia 406mm Telescope
Aras de los Olmos, Valencia (46179)
Spain
The Alto Turia Astronomical Observatory (CAAT), managed by the Valencian Astronomy Association in Aras de los Olmos, promotes research, education, and outreach in astronomy. This semi-professional observatory, with telescopes up to 0.5 meters and specialized viewing areas, is located at 1,280 meters altitude, providing optimal observation conditions. Since 1998, it has been a regional reference.
Descripción
The 406 mm Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope, Meade LX200 16-inch model, combines robustness and precision in a compact design. Its primary and secondary mirrors, together with the corrector plate, provide a focal length of 4,064 mm (f/10), delivering sharp images and a light-gathering capacity 3,364 times greater than the human eye. With a limiting magnitude of 15.3 and an angular resolution of 0.34″, it is an ideal instrument for studying faint celestial objects and fine details in astronomical observation.
The telescope is mounted on a solid fork mount in equatorial configuration, fully computer-controlled from an adjacent room that reduces turbulence and improves working conditions. The focusing system, based on the movement of the primary mirror, is complemented by an electric servomotor that enables precise control both manually and remotely.
Among its accessories are specialized CCD cameras (SBIG ST7 and Finger Lakes), an automated filter wheel, and a focal reducer with off-axis guider, allowing seamless transitions between visual observation and advanced astrophotography. It is also equipped with eyepieces and a star diagonal for high-quality visual sessions.
Beyond research, this telescope plays a fundamental role in scientific outreach, bringing astronomy closer to thousands of visitors who have had the opportunity to explore the deep sky through its optics.
