Sobre "Mount Lemmon Observatory"

The Mount Lemmon Observatory is located at the summit of Mount Lemmon, in the Santa Catalina Mountains, northeast of Tucson (Arizona, USA), within the Coronado National Forest. It is operated by the Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona under a special permit from the U.S. Forest Service.

Inaugurated in 1954 as a U.S. Air Force radar station for tracking missiles and satellites, it was converted into an astronomical center in 1970. It currently hosts several optical telescopes, including 1.52 m and 1 m reflectors, used for professional research and educational programs.

Its activities include high-resolution astronomical observation, the tracking and discovery of asteroids and comets (especially through the Catalina Sky Survey), research in infrared astronomy, student training, and science outreach via the SkyCenter, which organizes public nighttime observing programs, workshops, and specialized events for amateur astronomers and educational groups.
