Sobre "Noche bajo las estrellas en el Cerro del Hierro"

Cerro del Hierro is a Natural Monument nestled within the Sierra Norte Natural Park. This unique mining landscape, whose origins date back thousands of years, tells the story of how human beings have shaped and harnessed the mountain environment throughout history.

Against the backdrop of sunset, Engranajes Ciencia invites you to a family experience: a guided tour in which adults and children, hard hats in hand, will explore the depths of this ancient open-pit iron mine. We will uncover its fascinating geological, mining, and social history as we follow trails, search for fossils and minerals, and pause at some of the most spectacular corners of this karst monument.

Along this easy-going walk—suitable for all ages—we will venture along little-used paths, tunnels, and walkways that lead to the most surprising and hidden spots of Cerro del Hierro.

During the tour, you’ll learn how to read the passage of time in the rocks and minerals around you, and you’ll discover some of the natural pigments most prized by mankind through the ages: limonite, azurite, malachite…

After sunset, as night falls, we’ll take a break to enjoy the picnic each family has brought and soak in the open-air atmosphere.

To close the day, we will hold a stargazing workshop under one of Europe’s finest night skies—recognized as a Starlight Reserve and Tourist Destination. You’ll learn to orient yourself by the stars, identify the major stars and constellations, locate the Milky Way, and uncover many of the sky’s most astonishing wonders. Weather permitting, we’ll also have the chance to observe a visible galaxy or nebula through a high-power telescope.

This experience is organized in collaboration with the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the astronomy workshop requires a clear sky, if weather conditions do not allow it to take place immediately after the Cerro del Hierro visit, participants will be offered the opportunity to attend the workshop on a future date.
